Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry is a behavioral test that evaluates the ability to hear sounds at different pitches (frequencies) and volumes (intensities). The results help diagnose the type and degree of hearing loss.

Types of Pure Tone Audiometry

Air Conduction Test: Uses headphones to test the entire hearing system.
Bone Conduction Test: Uses a bone vibrator to check inner ear function.

A series of pure tones at different frequencies (250 Hz to 8,000 Hz) are played.
The patient signals when they hear the sound, usually by pressing a button.

Speech Audiometry

Speech audiometry is a key hearing test that evaluates how well a person can hear and understand speech. It is often performed alongside Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) to assess the impact of hearing loss on communication.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a diagnostic test that evaluates the function of the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane). It helps in detecting middle ear disorders, such as fluid buildup, eardrum perforation, or Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Tympanometry Works

The patient remains still and does not speak or swallow during the test.
A small probe is inserted into the ear canal.
A machine records the movement and plots it on a tympanogram.
This causes the eardrum to move in response to pressure changes.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

ABR is an advanced electrophysiological test that evaluates the function of the auditory nerve and brainstem pathways in response to sound. It’s especially useful for testing newborns, children, or individuals who can't respond behaviorally, and also helps in diagnosing neurological hearing issues.

What ABR Measures

The neural activity generated by sound as it travels from the cochlea (inner ear) to the brainstem.
Electrical signals are recorded using surface electrodes placed on the head.

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)

A non-invasive test used to assess the function of the inner ear (cochlea). OAEs help identify potential hearing loss, especially in newborns and young children.
